TERESA OF CALCUTTA

(Gonxha Agnes Bojaxhiu) was born in Skopje, on 26 August 1910, the fifth and last child of Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu. She was baptized the following day and received her First Communion at the age of 5½. From that time forward, she was filled with love for souls.

In 1928, desirous of serving as a missionary, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland. She went to India in 1929, professed first wows in May 1931 and perpetual vows in May 1937. During the twenty years she spent teaching in India, she became known for her charity, zeal, devotion and joy.

On 10 September 1946, she received from Jesus the call "to leave everything behind and serve him in the poorest or poor." In 1948, she obtained ecclesiastical permission to begin her apostolate in the slums of Calcutta. The Missionaries of Charity became a Religious Congregation of diocesan right on 7 October 1950, and were raised to a Congregation of pontifical right on 1 February 1965. The specifi charism of the Congregation is to satisfy the infinite thirst of Jesus for love and for souls by working for the salvation and the sanctification of the poorest of the poor.

To extend her mission of love, Mother Teresa started the branch of the Missionaries of Charity Brothers (1963), the Contemplative Sisters (1976), the Contemplative Brothers (1979) and the Missionaries of Charity Fathers (1984), as well as the Association of cooperators, suffering cooperating, and the Corpus Christi movement for priests. At her death, on 5 September 1997, the Congregation numbered 3,842 Sisters, working in 594 houses in 120 nations.

Despite a painful experience of inner darkness, Mother Teresa travelled everywhere, concerned, like Mary in the account of the Visitation, to spread the love of Jesus throughout the world. She thus became an icon of God's tender and merciful love for all, especially for those who are unloved, unwanted and uncared for. From heaven she continues to "kindle a light for those living in darkness here on earth."

LITURGIA VERBI

Lectio prima

Quis poterit cogitare quid velit Dominus?

A reading from the Book of Wisdom 9, 13-18

What man can know the intentions of God?
Who can divine the will of the Lord?

The reasonings of mortals are unsure
and our intentions unstable;
for a perishable body presses down the soul,
and this tent of clay weighs down the teeming mind.

It is hard enough for us to work out what is on earth,
laborious to know what lies within our reach;
who, then, can discover what is in heavens?

As for your intention, who could have learnt it,
had you not granted Wisdom
and sent your holy spirit from above?

Thus have the paths of those on earth been straightened
and men been taugh what pleases you,
and saved, by Wisdom.

Verbum Domi- ni. R. De- o gra-ti- as.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

First reading

Who can divine
the will of the Lord?

The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

corpo corruptibile appesantisce l'anima

R. Rendiamo grazie a Dio.

Psalmus responsorius

1.   Tu fai ritornare l'uomo in polvere,

2.   Tu li sommergi:
sono come un sogno al mattino,
come l'erba che germoglia;
al mattino fiorisce e germoglia,
alla sera è falciata e secca.R.

3.   Insegnaci a contare i nostri giorni
e acquisteremo un cuore saggio.
Ritorna, Signore: fino a quando?
Abbi pietà dei tuoi servi! R.

Responsorial Psalm

Il salmista: Ps 89

R.   O Lord, you have been our refuge from
one generation to the next.

1.   You turn men back into dust and say:
'Go back, sons of men.' To your eyes a
thousand years are like yesterday, come
and gone, no more than a watch in
the night.

2.   You sweep men away like a dream, like
grass which springs up in the morning.
In the morning it springs up and flowers:
by evening it withers and fades.

3.   Make us know the shortness of our life
that we may gain wisdom of heart. Lord,
relent! Is your anger for ever? Show pity
to your servants.

4.   In the morning, fill us with your love; we
shall exult and rejoice all our days. Let
the favour of the Lord be upon us: give
success to the work of our hands.

Lectio secunda

R. De- o gra- ti- as.

Second reading

Have him back, not as a slave any more, but as a dear brother.

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to Philemon

This is Paul writing, an old man now and, what is more, still a prisioner of Christ Jesus. I am appealling to you for a child of mine, whose father I became while wearing these chains: I mean Onesimus. I am sending him back to you, and with him - I could say - a part of my own self.

I should have liked to keep him with me; he could have been a substitute for you, to help me while I am in the chains that the Good News has brought me. However, I did not want to do anything without your consent; it would have been forcing your act of kindness, which should be spontaneous.

I know you have been deprived of Onesimus for a time, but it was only so that you could have him back for ever, not as a slave any more, but something much better than a slave, a dear brother; especially dear to me, but how much more to you, as a blood-brother as well as a brother in the Lord.

So if all that we have in common means anything to you, welcome him as you would me.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Seconda lettura

Se dunque tu mi consideri amico, accoglilo come me stesso.

Parola di Dio.
Rendiamo grazie a Dio.

Evangelium

Qui non renuntiat omnibus quæ possidet,
non potest meus esse discipulus.

Il diacono:

Dominus vobiscum.

R.  Et cum spi-ri-tu tu-o.

Lectio sancti Evangeli secundum Lucam           14, 25-33

R.  Glo- ri- a ti-bi, Domi-ne.

In illo tempore:

Gospel

None of you can be my disciple
unless he gives up all his possessions.

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Great crowds accompanied Jesus on his way and he turned and spoke to them.

'If any man comes to me without hating his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple. Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

'And indeed, which of your here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had enough to complete it? Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, the onlookers would all start making fun of him and saying, 'Here is a man who started to build and was unable to finish."

Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who advanced against him with twenty thousand? If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace.

So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.'

The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Vangelo
